Flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs) are large bags made from either polypropylene (PP) or low-density polyethylene (LDPE) for the purpose of transporting dry bulk goods with ease.
Here are some frequently asked questions about FIBCS and FIBC liners.
Are FIBCs Reusable?
Our multi-trip bags are reusable as they have a 6:1 safety factor. Single-use bulk bags have a 5:1 safety factor and are manufactured for single use only. However, both bag types are extremely tough and do not tear or rupture easily because they are made from woven polymers, thus they are extremely robust.
Moreover, the polymers that FIBCs are made from are highly resistant to any contamination, making them easy to keep clean and, in the case of multi-trip bags, safe for reuse.
Are FIBCs Recyclable?
In the unlikely event that a FIBC does get irreparably damaged somehow, it can be easily and safely recycled. This is because the bags are made from PP or LDPE, both of which are thermoplastic polymers, meaning that they can be easily remelted and remoulded without burning.
The only catch ‒ like with any recyclable plastic ‒ is that the bags should not be bonded with other forms of plastic when going in for recycling as this can contaminate the polymer and render it unusable.
Are FIBCs Moisture Proof?
FIBCs on their own are typically not 100% moisture-proof because they are made of a woven polymer which, by its nature, will have tiny gaps allowing air and moisture to pass through. However, bulk bags are often fitted with special liners, which serve to waterproof the bag and prevent any moisture ingress from taking place.
The use of FIBC liners is fairly commonplace when the product is moisture sensitive. With FIBC liners installed, highly moisture-sensitive products can be transported with confidence.
How Are FIBCs Filled And Emptied?
While there are many different designs for FIBCs, depending on the bag’s contents, a common way of filling and decanting them is by means of a spout that is built into the top and the bottom of the bag. A full FIBC will be lifted by a forklift and the spout will be opened on the bottom, which will allow the contents to run out. Conversely, when filling the bag, the spout on top will be used to pour the contents in.
